Indian economy poised to grow at 9-10% in medium-term: CII

NEW DELHI: India's economy can grow at 9-10 per cent in the medium-term with a multi-pronged economic strategy, industry body CII said today, outlining ten areas requiring policy attention that can bring huge economic benefits for growth, investment and employment creation.
The areas highlighted by the industry body for more attention include macro-economy, mining, manufacturing, land acquisition, energy, labour reforms, skill development, taxation, financial sector and Companies Act.

On macro-economy, it hoped that the government would stay the course on fiscal discipline.
"Setting a ceiling on subsidy expenditure would be an important step in that direction," said CII PresidentSumit Mazumder.
The industry body suggested that all subsidy disbursal may be converted into direct benefit transfer (DBT) by linking Jan Dhan Yojana, Aadhar and mobile technology or the JAM trinity, including for foodgrains, LPG and kerosene, within two years.
Welcoming the government's resolve to introduce GST, CII said the indirect tax reform would add 1.5 percentage points to the GDP growth rate.
On Land Acquisition Bill, CII suggested that compensation package should be reviewed to reduce rehabilitation and resettlement costs as sellers receive multiples of market value on acquisition.
The consent clause from Gram Sabhas should be dropped as it is already required from land owners for Schedule V areas, it suggested.
"There is huge need for ex-ante zoning of land for identification of land use over a 100 year time horizon and establishment of State Land Bank Corporations for scientific acquisition and disbursal of land parcels for industrialisation and urbanisation," Mazumder said.
The industry body welcomed several path-breaking economic reform measures announced by the Narendra Modi-led government during the last one year and called for continuing the strong momentum across ten critical areas.
"The government has exceeded the expectations of industry in the area of economic reforms. We are hopeful that the government would continue to maintain strong momentum of reforms going forward," Mazumder added.
The industry body categorised the government's achievements during the year into four areas: corruption-free governance; economic diplomacy; empowerment of states; and putting in place key policies to revive investment in the economy.
With transformational changes being envisioned not only on the economic front but also on the social, technology and foreign policy fronts, the first anniversary of the Modi government has been marked by fresh thinking on all major areas of governance, CII said.
On infrastructure, the industry body suggested renegotiation of PPPs, securing government approvals before award of projects, long-term financing options, systematic exit policies and dispute resolution, among others.
It also highlighted that non-performing assets in the infrastructure sector must be distinguished from those in other sectors.
In the area of energy, CII requested the government to address financial health of distribution companies to facilitate expansion of power and coal sectors.
"The Electricity (Amendment) Bill draft separating carriage and content is in accordance with CII recommendations and should be passed speedily. In the hydrocarbons sector, there is need for a roadmap for transition to a market-based gas pricing," it said.
In the mining sector, it said exploration by private sector can be facilitated through an Exploration Fund for scarce minerals.
It also emphasised on a National Steel Policy with focus on availability of ores and coal, a reasonable tariff regime, long-term financing, and skill development.

India’s economy accelerated faster than China in the first quarter of 2015 -May 31, 2015

India is raking up its economic reputation since Narendra Modi took over the Prime Ministerial role. Data on Friday indicated that the Indian economy has grown faster than that of China in the first quarter of the year. A 7.5 percent growth was registered by India, which is a little higher than the 7 percent growth shown by China in the same quarter.

Despite facing criticism over the land acquisition bill and farmer suicides, Narendra Modi is encouraging investment friendly policies, owing to which India is making a great recovery in the economic sector. The Prime Minister has to be credited for this rise and growth of the Indian economy.

When we consider sectors like Finance, Insurance and Real Estate, the growth has been recorded to be 11.5 percent. Many experts have come out in open to praise the policies of India and how they are progressing over the time. The managing director of the International Monetary Fund Christine Lagarde said that India retains a bright spot in the cloudy global horizon. Rajiv Biswas, Asia Pacific chief economist for the research firm HIS also said, “The Indian economy has shown signs of gradual recovery, but over the last year this has not met market expectations”.
Modi government has been receiving an ample of praise due to the acceleration of the Indian economy in the recent past. They are planning to spend $11 billion this year on the projects of railways, road and other infrastructure. This is done in order to derive more private investment in the country.
The Central Stats Office however saw a decline in the economic growth of India which has come down to 6.6 percent from 7.5 percent on Friday. It raises a substantial number of questions on the new method that is used for measuring an economic activity.

Adani Group mulling to bid for Sindri urea plant in Jharkhand 31 May, 2015,

NEW DELHI: Billionaire Gautam Adani-led Adani Enterprises is mulling to bid for the now-shut Sindri urea plant in Jharkhand as the USD 9.4 billion group plans to foray into the fertiliser sector.

The commodities-to-infrastructure group is seriously considering to participate in the tender which the government is likely to float soon for revival of the urea plant, sources said.

The plant, which has been lying shut since 2002, may require at least Rs 6,000 crore investment for  ..

Sources said senior officials of Adani Group recently met Fertiliser Ministry officials to show interest in revival of Sindri fertiliser plant.

When contacted, Adani Group spokesperson declined to comment.

Adani Group, founded in 1988 for import and export commodities, has grown into a USD 9.4 billion enterprise with interests spanning from coal to power, ports to logistics and infrastructure.

Sources said in their meetings with government officials, Adani group executives have shown keen interest in Sindri fertiliser plant revival.

The Cabinet had earlier this month approved revival of the closed urea plant at Sindri in Jharkhand by selecting an operator through open bidding.

The decision for bidding was taken after SAIL withdrew from its earlier proposal to revive Sindri plant in joint venture with National Fertilisers Ltd (NFL). Fertiliser Corporation of India Lt Sindri unit was the first PSU in independent India. The unit is lying defunct and is not in operation since 2002.

Sources said Sindri plant assumes importance as there is no functional urea unit in the eastern India except two small units at Namrup in Assam.

The Sindri plant could cater the demands of urea in the states like Bihar, Jharkhand, West Bengal, as neither of these states have any fertiliser plant.

Urea is a controlled commodity and its maximum price is fixed at Rs 5,360 per tonne. The difference between cost of production and selling price is paid as subsidy to the manufacture ..

At present, India's urea production is stagnant at 22 million tonnes, while the annual demand of the country is 30 million tonnes, the rest is met through imports.

China ‘needs more WA iron ore (02/06/2015)

WA’s mining boom is not over because China’s high demand for iron ore is still growing, the head of an Australian chamber of commerce in Shanghai says.
AustCham Shanghai chairman Peter Arkell said the Chinese Government’s urbanisation policy was driving continuing demand for WA’s high-quality iron ore.
Almost half China’s population of 1.4 billion live in rural areas and many are impoverished subsistence farmers.
Their low productivity prompted the Government to move millions of people into cities to boost their contribution to the nation’s economy as workers and consumers.
Mr Arkell told _The West Australian _he was disappointed with the perception in Australia that the mining boom was over. “We are selling more iron ore here year on year,” he said. “Last month’s was far greater than the month before.”
Mr Arkell, who has headed AustCham in Shanghai for 12 years, compared China’s current state of development to that of the US in the mid-1800s.
“To feed a population, you don’t need more than 10 per cent of the population doing rural activities. But in China, it’s just under 50 per cent (doing rural work),” he said.
“These are unproductive, not contributing much to the GDP of the nation. It’s very important for the economy to get to the point where the rural workforce is also 10 per cent, and get the other 30-40 per cent into the cities doing something more productive.”
China’s population is expected to keep rising until 2030 when it is projected to peak at 1.53 billion people.
WA accounts for 80 per cent of China’s investment in Australia’s mining and energy sectors.
Last year, WA exported 550 million tonnes of iron ore, 59 per cent of the total volume of China’s iron ore imports. Mr Arkell said China produces 300 million tonnes of iron ore a year, but at a much higher cost than in WA because it has to dig up one billion tonnes of material to produce that.
“China is shifting to a domestic market,” he said. “The fire has been lit under the economy so we are going to be using all the resources.”
But a return to high iron ore prices cannot be expected.
“We got caught. The price went to extreme because we could not meet it (demand),” Mr Arkell said.
Sam Phoen, ANZ China’s head of global markets, said Australia seemed to be more worried about China’s economic growth slowdown than China was.
